The Special Olympics Kenya is a special movement established to support persons with intellectual disabilities by providing year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympics type sports, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. This inspires people in the world to open up their minds, accept and include these special people in their day to day activities.

The competitions in Nakuru were preparation for the team to represent Kenya in the Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in 2015 in Los Angeles California in USA. Previously, the Kenyan team has been performing very well in major international competitions which have brought the country much pride as a sporting nation. For Instance, in the year 2012, the swimming team represented Kenya in the World Aquatic Competition in Puerto Rico where 2 men and 2 ladies from the team received four silver medals and one bronze medal. During the same time, a 7 a-side unified soccer team represented Kenya in the Africa Unity Cup in Royal Bafokeng, South Africa where they finished 4th overall out of the ten African countries that participated.

ICDC both sponsored and participated in the sporting event held in Nakuru. The Corporation is responsive to the various needs in the community in which it operates especially in the areas of education, health, disadvantaged groups and also in times of calamities.
